Ok, maybe that title's a bit long and maybe it's a bit controversial but who cares right? I do! That's kind've the point.
I haven't blogged in a while and I apologize but between work, blogging and sleep... sleep's been kind've winning... I mean work... work takes up all my time... I mean who has time for sleep! (this is my disclaimer in the event that any of my bosses come across my blog during their effective, time-consuming and productive days here at work).
I've been contemplating writing something with a controversial edge for some time but haven't quite put my finger on what exactly should I write about as yet, hopefully I'll figure it out before the end of this blog.
Gas prices… nah that’s been done and all we do is sit and watch the price of gas rise despite the price of oil falling. I mean, I remember when Jamaicans had balls and we rioted in 1999 and gas prices fell. Here we are 12 years later, the government has introduced E10 that is claimed to be environmentally friendlier and will be cheaper for the Jamaican consumer.
Yet gas prices are through the roof!!
JA$1000 (or approximately US$11.60 - yes our interest rate 12yrs later also sucks) worth of gas barely reaches ¼ of the tank and lasts almost half of the distance of what gas could’ve been stretched to before and we’re sitting on Facebook and Blogspot.com updating our status’ about the price of gas. Kmt (see ‘My Life as an Acronym - WTF!’ for ‘kmt’ definition)!!!
JPS (Jamaica Pussyhole Service)... Yea why not, they've been in the news lately.
Not to stray but there's a point to where I'm going. Imagine this... The government has been giving Digicel hell about the merger between them and Claro (despite the existence of LIME another telecommunications company in Jamaica) and implying that there's going to be a monopoly if Digicel takes over (despite the existence of LIME another telecommunications company in Jamaica) and noooo we can't have that. To be honest, Digicel has been running an unofficial monopoly in Jamaica for the last 10yrs people. Didn't you get the memo?
They've even suggested that Digicel runs Claro under a different name, as a separate entity. How is this going to benefit LIME if Digicel charges $2 a minute to call their other company and $18 per minute to call LIME? Ahmmm, that's still basically a monopoly.
But the point is, why is the government suddenly concerned about the possible monopoly situation in the telecoms industry when JPS has been running a monopoly on the electricity in Jamaica for the past 85 years and counting?
In any case, they are being investigated and rightly so. I mean I've been trying to figure out how the JPS staff has such great eye sight for years and I'm paying 30gs for fucked up looking glasses and 7gs every 3 months for contact lenses. Just last month I sat in my living room and watched the JPS pickup truck pull up at my gate. This man is supposed to go to the electricity meter to take an accurate reading of my usage in order for me to receive a bill. Or so I thought! Instead, he stood at the gate with his notepad and while looking up at the sky, possibly wondering if it was going to rain (or as I quietly hoped he would look up just in time to catch the bird shit) he jotted something on his paper, jumped back in his pickup and drove off. Needless to say, I'm still in shock at the $14,000 light bill I had received a few weeks later. Especially considering that when it had reached $5000 I started bathing in freaking cold water on a daily basis in an effort to cut back on current usage but maybe I'm just doing it wrong. Funnily enough, a couple months ago another JPS employee arrived at my gate as I was washing my car and I gladly let him in so he could read the meter and low and behold a few weeks later I was beaming happily at the $3300 light bill I had received.
All I have to calmly say about JPS at the moment is "Karma is a bitch motherfucker! You'll get yours. You'll get yours."
Which brings me to another controversial topic on the horizon (dude we're still in space)... relationships. I've been single for 2 yrs unfortunately. I say unfortunately because I'm at a stage in my life where I would love to be settled. At the tender age of 18 (merely 2 years ago... ok, ok i mean 12 years ago) I had seen myself by now, married with kids, a nice job, 2 cars in the garage, a white picket fence, the works!
I have a nice job now so let's see what happens from here on out. But my controversy about relationships isn't with relationships itself, its about those types of relationships where the woman expects the man to be dishing out cash like his name's 'Cash for Gold' or something to that effect.
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for treating my partner like she's my world, my everything. I don't mind cooking dinner for her or breakfast in bed or taking her out to dinner when there's no special occasion. I don't mind paying for the occasional mani/pedi because I love to see, what's it called? 'French manicures' (let me Google that)? Or "getting her hair did" because I know I'll be running my fingers through it more than she will and although I don't expect the thought to be vice versa it would be nice. But what I do have a problem with is the fact that some women expect for the man to spend. They expect him to give her the credit card, the shopping money, the diamond rings and they make it known to him before the relationship even begins. I mean in some cases these women work great jobs and earn money yet they're digging deep into his wallet. I know its a "to each his/her own" topic but come on, women you fought for your independence harder than anything else.
Don't embrace your inner gold digger. This is 2011, being independent is sexy and if you balance it right its even sexier.
Whew! Seems I had a lot more on my mind than I thought so let me end here on a small and controversial note.
Enjoy:
Yes, that would be me. Am I? Everybody has an opinion until somebody puts it in writing then it becomes a fact. See picture above.

My Life as an Acronym - WTF?!?!
BIONTSAMS!
Believe it or not this shit actually makes sense!
U know I sat down the other day and actually thought to myself how funny it is that as u grow up u learn many catch phrases, some of them stick, some of them fade until u have friends like mine who want to be in on the latest trends that revive the old ones as new ones.
I’ve never been able 2 be in on any of these unfortunately. Ah lie! I did help to buss “G.Y.B.” amongst my friends & 2 this day girls are still trying 2 figure out the real meaning behind that phrase LOL! (No pun intended)
But growing up we didn’t know what an “lol” was or an “smh”. I grew up using actual words or phrases like “cree” (well that’s not an actual word but see where I’m going with this) which meant time-out and u crossed ur middle finger and the one beside the thumb (forgive me I have no clue wtf that finger between the middle one and the thumb is called, is it the index finger or is the middle one called index? I always get confused).
In prep school here in JA we had phrases like “You get bulla!” which in essence meant you didn’t get jack shit! That’s the best way to describe it honestly! That evolved to “You get buff!” which mean you got dissed big time or insulted mainly by a girl that you liked but back then we didn’t treat the girls we liked nicely. Instead we showed our affection by insulting and treating them as badly as we could because that’s actually what we did best. Don’t ask, I still don’t get the logic.
In the early day’s of high school this changed to “flop” which also meant you got insulted, which eventually evolved into a weird stretch of syllables “meeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!”.
Pronounced exactly as it’s spelt.
And how could I forget "VVVVVVVVV!" which meant that you did or said something gay or strange (no I'm not homophobic or prejudice but that was the expression at the time) which was usually followed by a symbol made with your fingers to shape a V.

Now in the age of Blackberry messenger, Google Chat and the little used MSN [at least in my book, don’t like it "GOMFP!" (Get off my fucking page!)], my daily life revolves around all these acronyms that sometimes I have to press the pause button and replay in my head to figure out the exact meaning. Ppl… sorry, people are talking online daily with phrases like:
Lol – Laugh out loud
Lmfao – Laughing my fucking ass off (this one’s kind’ve ummm… yeah)
Rofl – rolling on the floor while laughing
Smh – Shake my head
Omg – Oh my God
Hold up, I have to put in a foot note right here because I have noticed more than one time while in the middle of a video chat, I will say something corny or funny that I actually laugh about and the other party will type ‘dwl’ or ‘lmfao’ but they’re sitting there and I don’t know if they’ve forgotten that I can see them but they ain’t fucking laughing.
Ok, back to our regular scheduled programme...
I have always applauded Jamaicans on their creativity and their ability to make everything unique to us and as a result we have already developed our own acronyms that have already started to be used by ppl that aren’t even Jamaican. Words like:
Kmt – Kiss my teeth - this is a low hissing sound that you can literally make by clenching your teeth together and drawing air through them.
Bbc – Bumboclaat – if you’ve ever heard anything about Jamaica you would’ve heard about our expressive style of cursing. There’s no explanation or meaning to this word that can explain how strong it is.
Bbrc – Bumborassclaat – confused expression on face as I proceed to type this one to one of my friends in this very moment.
Dwl – Dead wid laugh - dying of laughter
Kmrc – Kiss my rassclaat – basically in layman’s terms it means to “Kiss my ass!” but we had to be colorful with it.
I mean, seriously? What’s next?
The other night I was out at a bar enjoying a Johnny Walker & Coconut Water (if you haven’t tried it, I’m going to take this opportunity to give you my professional alcoholic opinion: This shit is the boss! Get to drinkin’!), when this girl beside me in the midst of her convo exclaims, “LOL!" followed by an "OMG!” I mean she literally spelt the letters and I sat there wondering what the hell ever happened to just laughing?
Nehow, let me get bk to my wrk. Thanx for reading. Enjoy ur day. Ttyl!

Beam me up Scotty! My first blog ever!
Day 1. Captain’s first blog.
Kettle is boiling water for my first cup of coffee and I’m here wondering, “How the hell does it know when the water is boiled? It’s not like I can see a temperature gauge on the side of it so how does it know? This bloody kettle is smarter than me to rahtid!”
I’m sitting here at my desk, a full hour and a half before work hours actually begin… its 7am here in Jamaica, 2am somewhere else in the world and I’m at fucking work. Unbelievable! But I’ve been doing it every day since I started working here 3 weeks ago (today’s my 3 week anniversary!).
Why do I do it? I love my job. Even though I have ‘manager’ at the end of my title, I get to wear what I want to work, which gets the corporate types jealous in their spiffy little uniforms. I get to take lunch when I want for as long as I want, which usually means eating at my desk taking bites in between writing emails, answering calls, signing invoices and requisitions, viewing quotations and checking out car parts online that I can barely afford much less order but I have big dreams so screw me! And in between all that I get to attend management meetings twice a week which usually turn into a colorful display of the English language combined with Jamaican patois [see inserts below]:
CEO: “Craig, what the fuck?!? Seriously, how di bumboclaat u mek this happen (again) this week?”
Craig (staring at notepad filled with potential lines for latest blog): “I ordered the parts, I cross-referenced the part numbers and I confirmed everything with the supplier. We had several long emails back & forth, I scanned diagrams & circled exactly what I needed, I took a photo with my BB and emailed it with my finger pointing at exactly what part was broken and the supplier still sent the wrong part.”
CEO: “In other words… you fucked up didn’t you?!? [short pause] YOU fucked up.”
And somehow at some point in all of this someone manages to crack a joke and we end up laughing at the end. Yup, I look forward to those moments twice a week.
Hold on, water’s finished boiling. Coffee time!

So I got up and put in 2 teaspoons of coffee, filled my red cup (yes its red, it’s different and it’s me) with water then reached in the fridge only to pick up an empty can of condensed milk. The “WTF?!?” came out a bit louder than it should have. It was one of those “Nooooooooo!” moments. You know like in that scene of a movie where the hero is on his knees, shirt opened, sweat and tears streaked across his face, arms raised above his head and just as he screams “Nooooooooo!” it starts to rain? – That was me. But then I found another can hidden a little further down and I was ok.
After countless spoonfuls of this sweet goodness I’ve decided I need a bigger spoon but I’ll be ok for today at least. I got my coffee, it’s free and stored in my office so I can survive another day. With JA$70 worth of coins in my pocket and thinking about going to raid the coin tray in my car, I better survive today!
I’m slightly stressed out even though I cleared all my paperwork by working till 9pm the night before. The supplier who screwed me over the day before is still giving me a bullshit excuse. I hate excuses, especially when I have to in turn try to give them. Let’s face it… an explanation for anything that went wrong is an excuse for why it didn’t happen. At least to me it is. So don’t give me one of those blah, blah, blah versions, because that’s all I hear, while I think about the best color ink to sign your next memo in.
I think I’ll go with blue.
